AS: Can you start by introducing yourself and telling us about your background?
TJ: “I was born and raised in Calgary, Canada, and I did my undergraduate degree in journalism from Concordia University in Montreal, where I won the award for most outstanding journalism graduate in my class. I also have an MS in Integrated Marketing Communications from Northwestern University in Chicago. I've spent most of my career in corporate communications, however over the past few years I've ventured back into journalism and creative writing. I've published several op-eds on social issues, culture, faith, and identity in publications including Newsweek, Common Dreams and Truthout.
I’m also dabbling back into poetry, and I seem to be gravitating toward themes that explore culture and identity. I took a creative writing class in high school, and I’m rediscovering how satisfying and meaningful poems are for me as an expressive art form. On a personal note, I’m married and I have two kids and a cat. My husband Faizal works in IT and loves hiking and the outdoors, my daughter Summer is studying kinesiology at UT Austin and my son Rayan is a sixth grader and a performing artist who has been in several professional shows. There always seems to be an upcoming audition, rehearsal or performance on our calendar.”
AS: What was it like to co-author with your father? Do you have any favorite moments from writing the book that you’d like to share?
TJ: “Overall it was great to collaborate on the book with my dad. His original draft laid out his vision for the characters and plot line, and my extensive journalism and writing background gave me the chops to create a well-researched, polished story. We really didn’t have any major disagreements. During the writing and editing process, nearly every time I came to him with suggested revisions, he responded with “Looks good! That’s much better than what I had before.” He really respected my ideas on how to shape the story. In retrospect, though, that might have been partly because he wanted to get the book published quickly and he didn’t want to slow down the process by going back and forth. Lol.”
