Rare and Collectible Books FAQ

  • What makes a book considered rare or collectible?

A book is considered rare or collectible due to its age, rarity, condition, historical or cultural significance, first edition status, signed or inscribed editions, unique features, or demand among collectors.

  • What are antiquarian books?

Antiquarian books are rare, old, or collectible books, typically valued for their age, condition, rarity, or historical significance. These may include first editions, signed copies, or books with special bindings, often from the early 20th century or earlier.

  • What condition should rare or collectible books be in for you to buy them?

Lioness Books considers books in various conditions, but those in good to excellent condition (minimal wear, intact bindings, no missing pages) are typically more valuable. We also evaluate damaged books if they are rare or significant.

  • What factors are considered when determining the value of collectible books?

Lioness evaluates all books holistically considering condition, rarity, edition, significance, demand, special features, provenance, and current market trends.

  • What types of rare books do you specialize in?

We specialize in 19th and early 20th century literature, first editions, signed or inscribed, historical manuscripts, illustrated works (original engravings, woodcuts, or plates), and banned/suppressed books. Contact us to see if your book aligns with our inventory.

  • Where can I view your collection of rare books?

Our location in Leander, Texas carries a selection of rare titles that you can view in-store. However, our primary collection is available for viewing on our ebay store.

  • What should I know about antiquarian book care?

Books should be stored in a cool, dry environment away from direct sunlight. Handle with clean hands, use book supports (stands, pillows, etc) and avoid storing books spine up to prevent spine damage, and avoid over-opening fragile bindings. We can provide specific advice for your purchase.

  • Do you buy books with damage or missing pages?

We consider damaged books if they are rare or significant (e.g., early editions or banned titles). Value may be lower, but we’ll evaluate based on rarity and demand. Send us photos and details for an assessment.

  • Do you offer free shipping or returns for antiquarian book purchases?

We provide free shipping on all rare and collectible book orders, using secure methods to ensure safe delivery. If a book’s description is inaccurate (e.g., condition or edition misrepresented), we offer a 30-day return policy for a full refund. Contact us within 30 days of delivery to arrange returns, with the book returned in its original condition.
