Six Months for Lioness Books - By The Numbers
Sarah Ambrus • December 31, 2024

After only six months in business, Lioness Books has had an amazing start, thanks to the support of our dedicated community. Reflecting on the year through numbers shows our incredible success - all thanks to our patrons!

Events - 61

Lioness Books was able to host sixty-one events with our community partners over six months in business in 2024. Our primary goal was to partner with small businesses to cross-promote shared goals like shopping local and promoting literacy. While we did attend some larger events such as the Texas Book Festival and Old Town Christmas Festival, we mainly promoted smaller, neighborhood events that brought together the community around a shared love of books and reading.

Community Partners - 28

We connected with 28 community partners throughout our first six months in business in 2024. The bookmobile was hosted by small businesses like coffee shops and breweries. We were able to set up in several neighborhoods and encourage conversations about books and literacy in communities. We attended several makers fairs and festivals. We also worked with schools and hospitals! The possibilities for partnerships are endless and we are so excited to form new connections all over the Austin area in 2025.

Books Donated - 245

As a bookseller, giving away books for free may seem counterintuitive, but thanks to the generosity of our customers and supporters, Lioness Books was able to donate books in several different capacities this year! We have a "Free Book" cart that we are able to display at select events to make sure no one leaves empty-handed. We gave away 104 books from our Free Book Cart in our first six months in business.

We also donated 71 books to the Inside Books Project. Inside Books Project is an Austin-based community service volunteer organization that sends free reading materials to people incarcerated in Texas. Inside Books is the only books-to-prisoners program in Texas, where more than 120,000 people are behind bars. Inside Books Project works to promote reading, literacy, and education among incarcerated individuals and to educate the general public on issues of incarceration.

Finally, we opened our first Little Free Library at one of our community partners, Learn Lee Tutors, in Leander, TX, and donated 70 books. Little Free Libraries expand access to books by providing literature at no cost, at a variety of locations. Being able to donate books and provide maintenance is another way we strive to create strong partnerships with the community and improve literacy access for all.

Looking to the future...

As we strive to empower our communities through access to literature, we sign our goals accordingly. For 2025, we plan on expanding and continuing to grow our influence in several areas.

- Open and maintain 4 new Little Free Libraries in the Austin area community in 2025.

- Donate an additional 500 books to the community this year.

- Build 25 new community partnerships, while continuing to support the local businesses that have partnered with us since our inception.

Every purchase you make through our bookstore allows us to reach these goals and invest back into the community all year long. Thank you for your support!

Local author Cassidie Salley talks with us about her new gothic fantasy novel, Vanish in the Ambre . We spoke with Salley previously back in April about her book After the Light Died , and are now hosting her Book Launch Party at Wildfire Park in Leander on October 24th from 5pm to 9pm! There will be trick or treating, live music, and a food truck. Come in costume to receive a free Lioness Books tote bag! AS: Tell us about your new gothic fantasy book “Vanish in the Ambre”! CS: “It’s set in modern-day Texas, in a town called Trickem (based on the real-life town of Trickham!). All sorts of witches and fantastical creatures live there, but the town’s largest population is their infestation of ghosts. Our main character, Becca Newman, is a necromancer, specializing in reviving people’s pets and familiars. She’s on the job one day reviving a familiar when she stumbles upon a secret she wasn’t supposed to find.” AS: Do you have any favorite moments from the book—or writing it—that you can share with us? CS: “At the very beginning of the book is a chapter where Becca goes to the movies and a ghost interrupts her watching. That was the first time this story really clicked for me, trying to merge the modern-day teenager just trying to hang out with a deep and dark haunting. I spent the rest of the book trying to chase that energy I found in that one chapter.” AS: What messages or sentiments do you hope readers will take away from your book? CS: “While this is a very silly and (hopefully) funny book, a lot of its deeper themes are about grief and loneliness. Losing yourself after a traumatic event, losing friends and wondering what happened, trying to find yourself but still being labeled an outsider…all of this stuff is hard, and unfortunately a lot of young people can relate to it. While Becca is certainly not perfect, she is unapologetically herself. She’s alone because of it sometimes. Then one day, people who appreciate that about her start gravitating towards her. If there’s one thing I want people to take away from this book, it’s to not be afraid to be yourself even in the midst of grief and loneliness, because the right people will find you. If there’s another thing I want them to take away, it’s to not be afraid of being vulnerable in that grief, because sometimes that’s the only way to heal.”
